Having guidance assures learners that they're on the right track and increases learning engagement
CANBERRA, Australia - AussieJournal -- Thanks to advances in technology, self-directed learning has become an easy and popular option for delivering L&D in the workplace. It's a learning process in which the responsibility to learn falls on the individual learner, rather than an external source such as a trainer. The Acorn subject matter experts believe that despite this popularity, there is a better option – guided learning.
In recent years, self-directed learning has become increasingly popular among individuals seeking to take control of their own learning experiences. This approach has proven particularly attractive in the workplace, where it allows employees to learn at their own pace and takes pressure off supervisors who no longer need to be available to guide and teach around the clock.

Despite its high esteem, the Acorn experts have noted that there are several setbacks to self-directed learning for learners. These setbacks include unnecessary schedule stress, confusion about where to start, a lack of feedback and a lack of motivation.
In their latest opinion piece, the experts advocate for guided learning instead of self-directed learning. Guided learning involves an external source directing an individual's learning process by recommending study areas, offering resources and learning materials, and giving feedback on achieved goals.
While the experts admit self-directed learning is great for users when it comes to how and when they learn, it's not a good way to demonstrate strategic impact for the organisation. Guided learning alleviates some of self-directed learning's pain points and allows users to be directed towards relevant capabilities based on business outcomes.

Pursuit Technology is a fast growing HR technology company. Pursuit, via Acorn LMS, takes a different view to strategically enabling HR and L&D teams compared to traditional providers. Rather than focusing on analytics after learning experience, their products use workforce planning and capability frameworks prior to any learning. By linking to a company's strategy, Pursuit products can inform organisational capability gaps and suggest education, deliver this education, then measure the impact – proving business impact by the HR and L&D team in a quantifiable way.
