A new exploration of Medusa's origins in Greek mythology, tracing her transformation from an ancient Gorgon into one of mythology's most complex and enduring female figures

DARWIN, Australia - AussieJournal -- Independent author, publisher and researcher Peta Oakes, writing as Gaelic Mac Dubhdara, announces the release of Medusa: Before the Gorgon, an exploration of one of Greek mythology's most recognisable, feared and misunderstood figures.

For more than two thousand years, Medusa has haunted the mythological imagination. With serpents for hair and a gaze capable of turning mortals to stone, she became the most famous of the three Gorgon sisters. Yet behind the monstrous image lies a far more complex history of divine power, transformation, punishment, mortality and the changing representation of women in ancient mythology.

Medusa: Before the Gorgon returns to the ancient Greek and Roman sources to investigate how Medusa's story developed across centuries. From the terrifying Gorgon of early Greek tradition to the later account of her transformation preserved in Ovid's Metamorphoses, the book examines how different authors, artists and historical periods reshaped her identity.

The investigation explores Hesiod, Homer, Pindar, Apollodorus and Ovid, alongside ancient Greek art, temple imagery, Gorgon masks and archaeological evidence. It considers Medusa's relationship with Athena, Poseidon and Perseus, the significance of her severed head as a powerful protective symbol, and the extraordinary mythology surrounding her death and the birth of Pegasus and Chrysaor.

Beyond the familiar story of Perseus, the book examines Medusa's transformation into a symbol of female power, injustice, suffering, vengeance and resistance, while distinguishing between the earliest surviving traditions and interpretations that emerged much later.

Rather than treating Medusa as a single, unchanging mythological character, the book reveals how her image evolved from a terrifying supernatural being into a tragic and increasingly human figure whose story continues to inspire literature, art and contemporary discussion.

At its heart, Medusa: Before the Gorgon asks a compelling question: Was Medusa always a monster, or did centuries of storytelling transform the way we remember her?
