HILLCREST, Australia - AussieJournal -- When Stephen Fenn stood under a shade gazebo on a sunny December morning in 2021, he was just doing what any year five and six teacher would do on the last days of school—watching over his students as they lined up for a turn on a jumping castle.
Within seconds, everything changed.
Taking the stand via video link at the coronial inquest in Devonport, Mr. Fenn recounted the devastating moment a sudden, violent gust of wind—described as a dust devil—swept across the Hillcrest Primary School oval on December 16, 2021. The freak weather event lifted the inflatable high into the air, taking the lives of six young students: Addison Stewart, Chace Harrison, Jye Sheehan, Jalailah Jayne-Maree Jones, Peter Dodt, and Zane Mellor. Three other children were left critically injured.
As someone fairly new to covering stories like this, listening to the details of that afternoon is a heavy reminder of just how deeply a single moment can shatter a whole community.
Seconds of Chaos
Mr. Fenn explained to Coroner Olivia McTaggart how fast the weather turned. He was standing near the ride's operator, Rosemary Gamble, when a wall of dust and flying grass completely blocked their view.

"It was something I've never seen or experienced before," Mr. Fenn testified, recalling a sudden "whoosh" of air.
He recalled Ms. Gamble asking in confusion where the jumping castle had gone. When they looked over, the massive structure had simply vanished from the oval.
What followed was a nightmare no educator is ever prepared for. Mr. Fenn rushed across the field to try and save his students, attempting CPR and providing comfort where he could. Later that day, police asked him to head to the Mersey Community Hospital to help identify the children. Breaking down in court, he spoke of the overwhelming shock of seeing young Addison Stewart at the hospital, having had no idea until that moment that she hadn't survived.
