SYDNEY - AussieJournal -- Lara Beeston's daughter Gracie turned over a card on their family's Christian advent calendar and asked a question that stuck with her.

"Mommy, what does Redeemer mean?"

"That's when it clicked for me, what this calendar actually does," said Beeston, founder of Lacewing Creative. "It hands you the opening to say, let me tell you, what it means to be redeemed, and why he's called that..."

That kind of moment is part of why more than 31,000 families, churches, schools and cathedrals around the world have bought a Names of Jesus Advent calendar, and why pre-orders for the 2026 edition are open today.

Survey data suggests Gracie's question is far from unusual. A survey of 1,008 Australians by McCrindle found that 52% believe Christmas has lost its Christian meaning, and 58% would be happy for it not to lose any more. 88% believe Christmas's religious traditions and symbols should have a public place in celebrations, and 66% still prefer to hear "Merry Christmas" over any other greeting.

The Names of Jesus calendar https://lacewingcreative.com/products/names-of-jesus-advent-calendar skips doors and chocolate altogether. It's strung on twine, with 24 cards clipped on with wooden pegs. Each day, a child unclips the next card, turns it over to reveal a different name or title for Jesus, from Emmanuel, and Prince of Peace, to the Good Shepherd, then reads a short reflection on what that name means. The reflections take children past the manger scene and into who Jesus was said to be as he grew up.

"There are a series of emails to go alongside the cards," Beeston said. "Just a couple of paragraphs on what each name tells us about who Jesus is, they're a great help for the days you get stuck and can't find the words yourself."

"I love the idea of a family spending a few minutes each day thinking about who Jesus is," she added. "Every day you're looking at a slightly different side of his character. There's also something to just being able to peg the cards up. It looks pretty, it's festive, and it gives you a way to talk about Jesus with your kids."
