Part of the discovery process is understanding what simply is and isn't performing
CANBERRA, Australia - AussieJournal -- In recent months, the Acorn subject matter experts have had a lot to say about capabilities. But one area they haven't touched on yet is the capability discovery tool. Until now. Capability discovery is a process to ensure capabilities are mapped to the right job roles, job families and business functions. A capability discovery tool assesses the capabilities an employee possesses against a defined capability framework. The Acorn experts' article dives into why they're important and how to implement one.
A capability discovery tool process starts with employees or managers answering questions about their own or a team member's individual performance. At the end, a personal report is created. Depending on an organisation's intent for the tool, these reports will provide an overview of an individual's competency levels across several chosen capabilities.

"Part of the discovery process is understanding what simply is and isn't performing," said Blake Proberts (CEO and Co-Founder). "A capability discovery tool enables you to better map capabilities to job roles, uncover areas of strategic weakness, prioritise learning resources where they're truly needed, and create a deeper connection between your workforce and business strategy through professional development."
A capability discovery tool enables employees to self-assess their capabilities and offers business leaders insight into the accuracy, maturity, and availability of organisational capabilities. Without assessment, capabilities stagnate.
Before implementing a capability discovery tool, it's important to consider why it's needed and the expected benefits. Discovery tools utilise reflective questions and statements for assessment, which can be pulled from existing performance indicators in the capability framework or created as scenario-based questions. After the assessment, it is important to offer clear courses of action and resources to employees or managers.
