New preclinical research reports that HuMOLYTE®, a magnesium-containing medical food with 2′-fucosyllactose, reduced chemotherapy-induced gastrointestinal and oral mucosal injury in Wistar rats
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - AussieJournal -- IGH Naturals announced that a peer-reviewed original research study evaluating HuMOLYTE® has been accepted and published in Frontiers in Nutrition. The study, titled "Supplementation with 2′-fucosyllactose, a prebiotic human milk oligosaccharide (HMO), in a magnesium-containing medical food reduces chemotherapy-induced mucositis in Wistar rats," reports preclinical findings on HuMOLYTE®, a medical food formulated with 2′-fucosyllactose, magnesium, sodium, and potassium.
Chemotherapy-induced mucositis is a common and difficult side effect of cancer treatment that can affect the mouth and gastrointestinal tract. It may contribute to painful oral symptoms, diarrhea, dehydration, electrolyte loss, poor nutrition, and interruptions in treatment. For patients and caregivers, these complications can add physical and emotional strain during an already challenging time.

The newly published study evaluated HuMOLYTE® in Wistar rats exposed to commonly used chemotherapy agents, including doxorubicin, irinotecan, 5-fluorouracil, and cisplatin. According to the publication, HuMOLYTE® supplementation was associated with reduced severity of chemotherapy-induced diarrhea, less chemotherapy-associated weight loss, and preservation of gastrointestinal mucosal structure, including goblet cells.
The study also reported reduced inflammation in ileal, colonic, and oral mucosal tissue among animals supplemented with HuMOLYTE®. In laboratory cell studies, HuMOLYTE® improved goblet cell survival, supported mucin secretion, and helped maintain epithelial barrier function.
"This publication marks an important milestone for IGH Naturals and HuMOLYTE®," said Dr. Sourabh Kharait, corresponding author of the study. "While these findings are preclinical and require confirmation in human clinical trials, they provide a strong scientific foundation for further investigation of HuMOLYTE® as a supportive nutrition strategy for chemotherapy-related mucositis."

The authors noted that chemotherapy-induced mucositis remains an area of high unmet need, with few consistently effective preventive therapies available. The study concluded that an oral rehydration mix containing 2′-fucosyllactose HMO and electrolytes may have potential as a food-grade approach to supporting oral hydration and electrolyte repletion during chemotherapy.
IGH Naturals emphasizes that the findings are based on animal and in vitro studies. HuMOLYTE® is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent disease. Patients should speak with their oncology care team before adding any medical food or nutrition product during cancer treatment.
