A new mythology and historical study exploring Roman religious interpretation, Celtic deities, sacred landscapes, and cultural transformation in ancient Gaul.
DARWIN, Australia - AussieJournal -- Independent author and mythologist Peta Oakes has announced the release of Interpretatio Romana: Empire, Syncretism, and the Sacred Gods of Gaul, a new work exploring the religious and cultural intersections between Rome and the Celtic world during the expansion of the Roman Empire into ancient Gaul.
The book examines the Roman practice of interpretatio Romana, through which local deities were identified according to Roman divine categories while older sacred traditions, regional cults, and indigenous religious identities continued beneath imperial rule. Through mythology, sacred symbolism, historical analysis, and comparative religion, the work explores how cultural adaptation, syncretism, and spiritual continuity shaped religious life across the ancient world.
