- High Elbow Catch: This drill helps you develop a more efficient freestyle pull by focusing on keeping your elbow high and your forearm vertical as you extend your arm forward. To do this drill, swim freestyle with one arm extended forward and the other arm bent at the elbow with your hand near your shoulder.
- Sculling: To do this drill, hold your arms out in front of you with your palms facing down and your fingers spread apart. Then, move your hands back and forth in a figure-eight motion, keeping your elbows and wrists still. This motion creates a small wave that propels you forward.
- Fist Drill: The fist drill helps you focus on your catch and arm position. To do this drill, swim freestyle with your fists clenched. This will force you to rely on your forearm and upper arm to propel yourself forward.
- Catch-Up Drill: This drill helps you improve your timing and body position. To do this drill, swim freestyle with one arm extended forward while the other arm pulls through the water. As your pulling arm reaches your hip, touch your thumb to your extended hand, then switch arms.
- Kick Switch: This drill helps you improve your timing and body position. To do this drill, swim freestyle with one arm extended forward and the other arm pulling through the water. As you pull your arm through the water, kick six times, then switch arms.
- Finger Tip Drag: This drill helps you improve your catch and pull. To do this drill, swim freestyle with your fingertips dragging along the surface of the water as you extend your arm forward. This helps you focus on keeping your elbow high and your forearm vertical as you pull through the water.
- Catch-Up Drill with a Pull Buoy: To do this drill, swim freestyle with one arm extended forward and the other arm pulling through the water while holding a pull buoy between your legs. As your pulling arm reaches your hip, touch your thumb to your extended hand, then switch arms.
